Patterns In Nature
The forms of the natural world often leave me with a sense of awe and
reverence. To see the reiteration of patterns across time and context intimates
something more than I am capable of understanding, but rather than feeling
small and diminished, I feel part of a larger flow, a greater continuity.
The wannabe biologist in me used to ask, "why?" but more and
more, it seems like a nonsense question.

Architecture
Our building often takes on an alien fascination to me. It's like seeing
a bee hive or a bird's nest for the first time when I come across architectural
details that express elegance or raw utility or a precise aesthetic that
seems other worldly. Sometimes I want to go back and watch the hand that
laid the plaster or hear sandalized feet walking down an ancient corridor.

Guatemala & Cuba
Two very different places with equally unique cultures, landscapes,
and histories. The Mayan people of Guatemala have a place in my heart like
no others. They have an awesome genetic beauty as well as a sense of endurance,
grace, and acceptance that I admire greatly. I try not to romanticize a
culture I will never understand and can never be a part of, but it is like
the presence of a beautiful person that simply can't be ignored. I just
want to be allowed to see it, to stand close to it.
Cuba is as intense in many ways as Guatemala is serene. There are hundreds
of buildings in Old Havana that date back to the 1600's or before, that
have a staggering beauty in their decomposition. The people have a racial
diversity that still shares a common bond of energy and that oozes into
their sexuality, their music, their art, and their politics. A sensuous
smorgasbord.

Landscapes
There are both a change and a continuity in the earth that are a joy
to witness. Sunlight striking sandstone, wave pounding rock, a juniper snag
enduring the elements for a hundred years. When I pass through a billion
years of rock time on the Colorado Plateau, my plans for next Tuesday lose
their relevance.

Closeup
More than anything else, closeup work takes me out of my mundane consciousness
and allows me to catch a glimpse of the millions of other perspectives that
are available at any given instant. Most of my world is bigger than a bread
box and smaller than a house but behind a macro lens, simultaneous realities
unfold, new and freshly intimate each time.

Out There
Sometimes it's just an impulse, a half formed thought, or even an error
that outreached my intent. When I forget to play, I start to act and feel
my age which is something less than a blessing.

Oregon
This is my own back yard. Seems like I live where other folks travel
for their vacations. We're blessed with a costline of incredible beauty
to go with the volcanic power of the Cascades, the migratory waterfowl of
the Klamath Basin, and the desert fascination of the Ownhee. I could easily
remain satisfied without ever leaving home again.
